Raleigh bicyclist, struck on I-40 Monday, dies

— A bicyclist, who was struck by a delivery truck while riding his bicycle on Interstate-40 East early Monday, has died.

Marc Anthony Mathis, 44, of Raleigh, was struck by delivery truck around 3:30 a.m. on I-40 East near Avent Ferry Road, according to Raleigh police reports. Mathis died at WakeMed in Raleigh on Wednesday, police spokesman Jim Sughrue said Thursday.

Mathis was traveling on the far right side of the lane on I-40 East when the Greensboro-based Direct Link Courier truck struck him from behind.

The truck was traveling the speed limit, 65 mph, at the time of the collision. Sughrue said no charges are expected to be filed against the driver.
