BUIES CREEK — Aleksi Tossavainen and Justin Franz scored goals to lead Campbell to a 2-1 men’s soccer victory over UNC Wilmington Wednesday.
The Camels (2-0-1) jumped in front in the 21st minute when Tossavainen headed home Mitchell Cardenas’ corner kick.
Campbell doubled the lead when Ben Iiames served from the left corner to Franz, who controlled the ball at the top of the penatly area and drove a left-footed shot past Wilmington keeper Brad Newman.
The Seahawks pulled within one on a 66th minute counter-attack goal by Mateo Cardona on an assist from Michael Parrish.
In its next game, Campbell visits in-state rival Elon Saturday at 7 p.m.
Women’s Golf
Duke was tabbed fifth and N.C. State is ranked 25th in the National Golf Coaches Association preseason poll. Defending national champion Alabama is ranked first.
The reigning ACC champion Blue Devils return all six letter winners from last year’s team, including last season’s consensus player of the year Lindy Duncan.
For the Wolfpack, the preseason ranking is the first in program history.
The Wolfpack returns its top five golfers from last season including ACC Freshman of the Year Augusta James.
Duke and N.C. State each open its season at the Cougar Challenge hosted by the College of Charleston Sept. 9-11 in Hanahan, S.C. The tournament features 11 other ranked teams including Alabama, No. 3 Southern Cal, No. 7 Auburn, No. 9 Florida, No. 10 LSU, No. 11 Georgia, No. 12 Virginia, No. 13 Tennessee and No. 17 South Carolina.
Football
Former standout Kevin Jones has been added to the Saint Augustine’s coaching staff. Jones will coach the safeties.
Track and Field
Michael Kelly has been named track and field and cross country coach at Campbell, Director of Athletics Bob Roller announced.
Kelly joined the Campbell athletics staff last January as assistant coach, overseeing the distance program and has served as interim coach since Norbert Elliott left to coach at Purdue earlier this summer.
