Wake robberies among senior citizens may be linked

Wake County law enforcement agencies say someone has robbed several senior citizens as they returned to their homes in recent weeks. There’s a chance the crimes are related.

The agencies have asked the public’s help in solving the crimes, and they warned senior citizens to take notice if they are being followed home.

The first incident occurred about 10:30 a.m. on Aug. 12, when an 83-year-old woman returned to her home in the 1600 block of Glengarry Drive in Cary. A man armed with a knife approached her, pushed his way into her home and stole her purse. The suspect was described as a black man who stands about 5 feet 10 inches tall and has short hair. He was wearing a mask over his face.

Five days later, shortly after noon on Aug. 17, a 70-year-old woman returned to her home in the 1300 block of Holland Hills Drive near Fuquay-Varina, where a man followed her inside and demanded money. He was described as a black man who stands between 5 feet 10 inches and 6 feet tall with a thin build. The man was thought to be in his late 30s to early 40s and was wearing a white T-shirt, dark-colored pants, a blue bandana on his head and sunglasses.

The following Monday at about 8 p.m., a 96-year-old woman reported that she was approached and grabbed by a man outside her home in the 3400 block of Caldwell Drive in Raleigh. The man stole cash from her. The woman was not able to provide a description of the man.

At about 7:15 p.m. Aug. 24, an 85-year-old woman reported that she entered her home in the 300 block of Meredith Street in Raleigh and was confronted by a man who snuck up behind her. The man was armed with a knife, letter opener or similar weapon and took cash from her. He was described as a black man who stands about 5 feet 8 inches tall and weighs about 190 pounds and wore a light-colored head covering and all black clothing.

The most recent incident occurred Tuesday at about 5:20 p.m. A 77-year-old man was forced into his home in the 600 block of Daniels Street in Raleigh and robbed of cash. The suspect was described as a black man in his 40s who stands about 5 feet 8 inches tall, has a husky build, and weighs about 180 pounds. He was wearing a white shirt, blue jeans, had some type of cap or “net” covering his hair and was said to have “bad” lower teeth.

In each of the cases, the man was last seen fleeing on foot.
