College Notebook: UNC, Duke notch women's soccer wins at Duke Classic

— Paige Nielsen scored her first career goal and fellow freshman Summer Green scored a pair of goals as North Carolina’s women’s soccer team defeated Marquette 4-0 at the Duke Classic at Koskinen Stadium.

UNC (3-1-1) has not allowed a goal in 557 minutes since surrendering one in the fifth minute of the team’s season opener.

Duke 4, San Diego 1: The tournament host Blue Devils (5-1) opened play in the Duke Classic with four first half goals, including two from Gilda Doria.

N.C. State 3, Appalachian State 1: Jennie Krauser scored two second-half goals to break a 1-all tie as the Wolfpack (5-2) won its fifth straight. Rachel Harris had N.C. State’s other goal.

Field Hockey

North Carolina 6, Delaware 0: The Tar Heels (4-1) got two goals each from Sinead Loughran and Samantha Travers and one each from Emma Bozek and Emily Wold and earned their second shutout of the season at Delaware.

Men’s Golf

North Carolina: The Tar Heels opened their season with a 3-over-par 291 and are tied for sixth at the Carpet Capital Collegiate at Rocky Face, Ga. Senior Michael McGowan is tied for fifth at 3-under. Georgia leads the team standings at 10-under.

Men’s Soccer

Virginia 1, Duke 0: Cavaliers forward Will Bates netted a goal in the 68th minute to down the Blue Devils (1-3) in both teams’ ACC opener.

N.C. State 3, UNC Greensboro 1: Alex Martinez scored twice and Zabarle Kollie added a goal and an assist as the Wolfpack (5-0).

Volleyball

N.C. State 3, Western Carolina 0: Tournament host N.C. State, led by Meredith Richardson and Brie Merriwether, won 25-13, 25-13, 25-15 at the Midtown Invitational.

Central Michigan 3, Campbell 0: The Chippewas rallied facing a set point in the third set to sweep the Camels 25-11, 25-22, 26-24, in the first match of the Midtown Invitational.

Duke 3, Elon 0: The Blue Devils cruised 25-14, 25-21, 25-23 at the Duke Classic at Cameron Indoor Stadium. Kelsey Williams had 19 assists to lead Duke (6-1). Jeme Obeime had 11 kills and 13 points.

Millersville 3, Saint Augustine’s 0: The Marauders swept the Falcons 25-11, 25-6, 25-13 at the Mount Olive Invitational. Victoria Davis led the Saint Augustine’s (0-4) with seven kills.

Kennesaw State 3, N.C. Central 0: The Eagles (1-10) fell to Kennesaw State 3-0 (25-12, 25-22, 25-16) and beat Troy 3-0 (25-18, 25-10, 25-11) at the KSU Owls Invitational.
