College Notebook: N.C. State tops North Carolina in volleyball

— For the second time in coach Bryan Bunn’s three-year tenure, N.C. State’s volleyball team won its ACC opener, beating North Carolina 3-1 (25-23, 25-16, 21-25, 25-17) Friday night at Reynolds Coliseum.

The Tar Heels avoided the sweep with a strong third set following a string lineup tweaks by North Carolina coach Joe Sagula.

N.C. State sophomore Brie Merriwether had 18 kills and 21 points. Junior Meredith Richardson and sophomore Dariyan Hopper had eight kills each. Senior Alexa Micek led the team with 14 digs, followed closely by sophomore Nikki Glass with 13.

Cyr had 38 of N.C. State’s 42 assists.

Duke: Freshman Emily Sklar led the Blue Devils with 16 kills as they rallied for a 3-1 (14-25, 25-23, 25-21, 27-25) victory in their second match of the Michigan Invitational Friday at Cliff Keen Arena.

Duke fell in its opening match to Western Kentucky 3-1 (29-31, 25-23, 25-14, 25-19)

Appalachian State 3, Campbell 0: The Camels fell to 5-8 on the season following a 25-19, 25-10, 25-17 loss to the Mountaineers Friday in the opening match of the Wake Forest Black & Gold Challenge at Reynolds Gym. Freshman Renatta Laport had 12 digs for the Camels.

Chelsey Pachoud had seven digs and Heather Wilson added six. Freshman Sam Zuber had two blocks.

Field Hockey

North Carolina 3, Old Dominion 2: The Tar Heels downed the Monarchs at Francis E. Henry Stadium in Chapel Hill.

The Tar Heels got goals from senior Jaclyn Gaudioso Radvany and sophomores Samantha Travers and Charlotte Craddock to improve to 6-1. The Monarchs fell to 3-3.

North Carolina scored in the 16th minute on a penalty corner. Travers sent a hard shot past Old Dominion goalkeeper Marla Petriello for her sixth goal of the season. She got assists from seniors Katie Ardrey and Kelsey Kolojejchick.

Old Dominion answered just over two minutes later to make the score 1-1.

In the 56th minute, Tar Heel sophomore Charlotte Craddock scored her first career goal and put North Carolina up 3-1 when she dribbled into the middle of the circle then sent the ball around Petriello, who had come out to defend the shot.

Women’s Soccer

Campbell 4, Louisiana-Lafayette 0: Sophomore Ashley Clark had two goals to lead the Camels (4-1-1) over the Ragin’ Cajuns (4-4-0) in the Catamount Classic in Cullowhee.
