Wolfpack's Choi golfer of week

N.C. State’s Albin Choi was named Player of the Week by Golf World and Golfweek Magazine after his six-stroke win at the Tar Heel Intercollegiate. His five career victories tie him for second in program history with Tim Clark and Nolan Mills, five back of former NCAA champ Matt Hill.

Campbell: Amanjyot Singh shot a 1-over 73, and the Camels were 15th after Monday’s second round of the Golfweek Conference Challenge.


Duke: Cornerback Ross Cockrell earned ACC Defensive Back of the Week honors, recording six tackles, two interceptions and two pass breakups during Saturday’s 54-17 win against N.C. Central.

East Carolina: Trent Tignor, who averaged 42.2 yards on 10 punts Saturday, and outside linebacker Montese Overton earned Conference USA Player of the Week honors. Overton had a 16-yard fumble return for a score to go with 10 tackles and 2 1/2 tackles for loss against Southern Mississippi.

Saint Augustine’s: Tyron Laughinghouse was selected wide receiver of the week and Derrick Manning defensive back of the week by the CIAA. Laughinghouse caught five passes for 112 yards and two touchdowns during Saturday’s 30-14 win against Southern Connecticut State. Manning intercepted a pass and had six total tackles.

Shaw: Antonio Dunn had 26 carries for 165 yards and scored twice during Saturday’s 31-26 victory against Stillman to earn CIAA Offensive Back of the Week recognition.


Duke: The women’s basketball team has been tabbed No. 3 nationally in preseason by the Lindy’s College Basketball. .

Shaw: The men’s basketball team will play an Oct. 26 exhibition at North Carolina. The Bears will open the regular season Nov. 10 at Barton.


N.C. State: Outside hitter Morgan Cormier tallied 24 kills and 14 blocks while the Wolfpack went 3-0 last week and was named ACC Freshman of the Week.

Wednesday’s meeting will be 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Highland United Methodist Church. Mark Thomas, a local sports radio host who played football for Smithfield-Selma High and N.C. State before going to the NFL, will be guest speaker. Millbrook High baseball player Brian Nobles will be honored as the Student Athlete of the Week.
