CARRBORO — Sparked in an explosive 22-point second quarter by two touchdowns from Douglas Parrish and one from Trai Sharp, 2A Carrboro stunned previously undefeated Chapel Hill 35-0 Friday in Jaguar Stadium.
Parrish rushed 11 times for 114 yards and scores on runs of 17 and 12 yards. Sharp, who scored on runs of 17 and nine yards, added 55 yards on 12 rushes.
Carrboro led 28-0 after Sharp’s nine-yard run just 1:54 into the third quarter, coming one play after his own 51-yard punt return into the Chapel Hill red zone.
Alex McVeigh put an exclamation point on the shutout with a 94-yard touchdown pass to Marlin Johnson with 11:09 left in the game.
The Jaguars twice turned Chapel Hill away from inside the 10-yard line, helped both times by Chapel Hill penalties.
Johnson finished the game with 183 yards on six receptions. McVeigh completed eight of 12 passes for 194 yards with one interception.
“Everyone wants to talk about our offense, but this was a win for the defense,” Carrboro coach Jason Tudryn said. “We had one turnover and that was the difference in this game – turnovers.”
Carrboro intercepted Chapel Hill quarterback T.J. Johnson three times.
“We just didn’t execute tonight,” Chapel Hill coach Issac Marsh said. “Credit the Carrboro defense for that.”
Carrboro (6-0) avenged last year’s 22-9 loss at Chapel Hill’s Culton-Peerman Stadium and evened the series with its 3-A rival at 2-2. Chapel Hill, ranked No. 8 by the News & Observer, fell to 5-1 with its loss to the 2A Jaguars, who were ranked No. 12.
Carrboro’s George Carpenter intercepted two passes in the first half, helping to set up one touchdown as the Jaguars took a 22-0 lead into the break.
Carrboro stymied Chapel Hill on four plays at midfield and drove 55 yards in nine plays to end with 56 seconds remaining in the half on Parrish’s seven-yard run around for a 22-0 lead.
Johnson helped smother any Chapel Hill hopes for a comeback with his catch near the Jaguars 40, crossing wide-open between the hash marks and then out-legging a Chapel Hill defender to the endzone for 94-yards and the game’s last touchdown.
“Carrboro just out-played us from the second quarter on,” Marsh said. “We didn’t execute after the first quarter.”
It was the last game for both teams before they begin conference play next week. Chapel Hill visits Cardinal Gibbons next Friday, while Carrboro hosts South Granville.
