CHAPEL HILL — A walk-on football player at North Carolina was arrested early Sunday morning and charged with felony assault. Chapel Hill police arrested Nicholas Apostolos Weiler, 18, after an officer reported that he saw Weiler “punch a victim in the face,” according to the arrest report. Weiler was arrested at 2:57 a.m., at 150 East Rosemary Street.

Weiler is a freshman punter on the North Carolina football team. He is a non-scholarship player who hasn’t played in a game this season.

Police charged Weiler with felony assault afflicting injury and four misdemeanors: simple assault, resisting arrest, underage possession of alcohol and possession of a fake ID.

According to the arrest report, a police officer reported that he observed Weiler punch a victim in the face. The officer wrote that Weiler “fled on foot” after police approached him. Weiler had previously assaulted another victim, police said, and was consuming alcohol. Police said he possessed a fraudulent Pennsylvania ID.

Kevin Best, a UNC athletic department spokesman, said Weiler has been suspended indefinitely from all team-related activities.
