RALEIGH — A bicyclist struck by the side mirror of a box truck on Louisburg Road Monday afternoon was listed in critical condition today at WakeMed Hospital.
The truck side-swiped Christopher Small, 46, of Raleigh, around 2 p.m. while both were traveling south on Louisburg Road near Spring Forest Road.
An accident report completed by police indicated Small was not wearing any protective equipment.
The truck driver, John Billmyer III, of Monroe, N.C., was traveling in the right lane of Louisburg Road beside Small. He looked to the left to attempt to change lanes and swerved his truck to try to avoid hitting Small, police said. However, the passenger side mirror on the truck slammed into Small.
The impact pitched Small from the bicycle head first, according to the accident report filed by Raleigh police.
At the time of the accident, Billmyer was traveling 40 mph and the designated speed limit was 45 mph, the report said. He was charged with failing to reduce speed to avoid a collision.
