Police: man killed in one-car crash was doing twice the speed limit

Published: September 28, 2012

— A man who died early Friday in a single-car crash at Barwell Road and Tealbrook Drive was driving nearly 50 miles per hour over the speed limit, according to police.

Cody Jovan Matthews, 20, of Riverknoll Drive in Raleigh was driving 94 mph in a 45 mph zone when his Kia failed to negotiate a curve. Matthews overcorrected, and the car spun out of control, before the rear end struck a tree, according to a Raleigh police accident report. The crash happened shortly after 2 a.m.

Investigators say it’s unknown whether alcohol or other drug impairment was a factor in the crash. Matthews wasn’t wearing a seatbelt.

Barwell Road was closed for several hours while police investigated.
