Around the State

September 29, 2012

St. Augustine’s (3-1) vs. Elizabeth City State (2-2), 4 p.m.

Falcons QB Teddy Bacote is rolling. He passed for 317 yards and two TDs in last week’s win over Bowie State, giving him 923 yards and 9 TDs this season. ECSU has won two straight.

Shaw (1-3) at Virginia State (1-3), 6 p.m.

Shaw offense rolled up 35 points and 600-plus total yards last week but also committed five turnovers in a loss to Chowan. Could be a good matchup between Shaw’s passing game (436 yards, 3 TDs last week) against Sean Smith, who leads the CIAA with three interceptions. Va. State has struggled offensively, averaging just 16 points per game (11th in the CIAA).

Campbell (1-3) vs. Drake (2-2), 6 p.m.

Butler ran past Campbell last week. Expect Drake to take a different tact. Drake QB Mike Piatkowski, the reigning PFL offensive player of the year, became the program’s career leader in passing yards last week. He has 8,106 ... and counting.

Elon (2-2) vs. No. 5 Wofford (3-0), 1:30 p.m.

Elon QB Thomas Wilson passed for 302 yards in last week’s loss at Georgia Southern, his fifth career 300-yard game. Wofford had a bye last week.

No. 17 Appalachian State (2-2) vs. Coastal Carolina (2-2), 3:30 p.m.

ASU QB Jamal Jackson went over the 3,000-yard career mark last week. He’ll face a CC team that has lost two straight. ASU has won 15 consecutive games against current Big South teams.
