Durham authorities say man impersonating officer is running scam

Published: October 2, 2012

The Durham County Sheriff’s Office has issued a fraud alert, warning residents of a scam involving a man impersonating a law enforcement officer.

The impersonator has entered several businesses and tried to manipulate employees to give him cash, according to Paul Sherwin, spokesman for the Durham County Sheriff’s Office.

The suspect tells employees that their manager has been arrested and is requesting money from the business or from them to pay his or her bond to be released from jail.

The Sherriff’s Office asks that anyone who has been the victim of this crime to call 919-560-0900 to report the incident.
