RALEIGH – After seven straight losses to start the 2012 season, Enloe’s football team found itself trailing

again in the second half on Friday night. But this time, the Eagles ended up celebrating at the end of the

game.

Senior running back Carnell Lewis broke two long touchdown runs to lift Enloe past Broughton 20-14.

Broughton had just taken a 14-8 lead with 8:24 left when Lewis streaked down the left sideline for a 75-

yard touchdown. A two-point try failed, but the score was tied at 14-14.

Lewis made sure the Eagles sealed the deal six minutes later when he capped a 58-yard drive with a 32-

yard touchdown on a similar play to the left side.

“During the timeouts, we had a lot of discussion about who had who [to block],” Lewis said. “We were

hitting it pretty much the whole game. We knew it was going to open up for me, so we just went back to

it.

“We had to keep ourselves in it. There were a lot of penalties, including one that cost us a touchdown.

But we just had to keep fighting.”

Enloe (1-7, 1-3 Cap Eight 4A) won a road for the first time since 2009.

“Our team was focused this week,” Enloe coach Mike Massey said. “We made some changes this week

with personnel and I think it excited our coaching staff and excited our players. They have been working

hard. It’s hard for them to give up.

“At some point, I think they just got fed up and said enough is enough and wanted to put together a

full game. They did a good job. We made some mistakes, but ultimately we made the plays when it

mattered.”

Lewis scored all three Enloe touchdowns, going in from four yards out in the first quarter. He finished

with 118 yards on 17 carries.

“They earned that victory,” Massey said. “We’ve had a tough seven games, playing Garner, Southeast

Raleigh, Leesville Road and Wake Forest-Rolesville. I hope this shows them that they can still salvage

something this season.

The game was not artistic, with both teams committing numerous penalties and each team having a

touchdown wiped out by a penalty.

Enloe kept running different backs at Broughton (1-7, 1-3).

Roy Garris had 93 yards on 13 carries and Wallace Montague added 63 yards on the ground.
