Student accused of bringing pistol to Durham high school

— A high school student in Durham was arrested today after sheriff’s deputies say he brought a loaded handgun onto school grounds.

Kelvin Thomas Owens, 18, of 4 Savi Court, was arrested around 9 a.m. at Hillside High School.

Owens was observed by a sheriff’s deputy off campus with a group of other men acting suspiciously on Monday morning, according to Paul Sherwin, spokesman for the Durham County Sheriff’s Office. When he returned to campus a short time later, he smelled of marijuana and was searched by school administrators and deputies. During the search, deputies found a loaded .45 caliber pistol.

Owens is charged with possession of a firearm on educational property. He’s being held in the Durham County jail, his bail set $5,000 bail. Owens is also on probation for a Sept. 19 conviction of breaking and entering into a vehicle and larceny.
