RALEIGH — Police seized broken glass and two razor blades from the third floor room of a motel where investigators say a woman killed her toddler son and then attempted to kill herself.
Investigators obtained the search warrant late last month after finding Michelle Danielle Harpster and her son, Joshua Callahan, in room 323 of the Super 8 Motel on New Bern Avenue just before 2 p.m. on Sept. 26.
According to a search warrant filed late last week at the Wake County Clerk of Courts Office, Joshua appeared to be deceased and his mother was unresponsive. Harpster, 29, was taken to WakeMed in Raleigh while police obtained warrants charging her with murder.
In addition to the broken glass and razor blades, detectives seized two cell phones and phone chargers, two notebooks, one black backpack and one pink backpack, court records show.
Harpster remained hospitalized Monday. She will be booked into the Wake County Jail after her condition improves, according to police spokesman Jim Sughrue.
The woman was involved in a custody dispute with the boys father, Mark Callahan, who lives in Florida. The day before police found Joshua dead, Mark Callahan said he received a copy of a court affidavit ordering the childs mother to return to Florida for a custody hearing.
