Ride the bus to the N.C. State Fair

  • 2012 N.C. State Fair Want to go? Gates open Thursday at 3 p.m., and at 8 a.m. every other day through Oct. 21. The fun continues each day until midnight, but tickets to be admitted to the fairgrounds must be purchased prior to 9:45 p.m. Tickets to ride? Midway ride ticket booths are open from 9:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. The rides open at 10 a.m. They’ll run until 11 p.m. Sunday through Wednesday, and until midnight Thursday through Saturday. Just sightseeing? Exhibit halls will be open from 9 a.m. to 9:45 p.m. daily, except Thursday when they’ll open at 4 p.m. Get more info. http://www.ncstatefair.org/2012/

Forget the parking hassle and take the bus to this year’s N.C. State Fair, which starts Thursday.

Special fair shuttles will run every day of the fair in Raleigh, Cary and Durham. Garner and Chapel Hill/RTP buses run only on Saturdays and Sundays. All buses drop off and pick up passengers at Gate 1 on Hillsborough Street. All buses require exact change and will not accept normal bus passes in lieu of payment.

Raleigh and Cary

A round trip is $4. Passengers with disabilities and seniors age 65 and older pay $2. Kids under 40 inches ride free with a paying passenger. Info: 919-996-3030

Hillsborough Street, Raleigh

Service runs 8:30 a.m. to midnight Friday through Oct. 21 (2:30 p.m. to midnight on Oct. 11).

Look for the blue N.C. State Fair signs at bus stops along Hillsborough Street. The route runs from the intersection of Wilmington and Morgan streets downtown and proceeds down Hillsborough Street to the fairgrounds.

2728 Capital Blvd., Raleigh

Bus service runs 8:30 a.m. to midnight Friday through Oct. 21 (2:30 p.m. to midnight on Oct. 11).

The park-and-ride lot is one block north of the Capital Boulevard exit (Exit 11) off the Beltline. Follow the green N.C. State Fair signs to the lot behind the old Westinghouse building off Capital Boulevard.

WakeMed Soccer Park on East Chatham Street, Cary

Service runs from 8:30 a.m. to midnight Friday through Oct. 21 (2:30 p.m. to midnight on Oct. 11).

Follow the green N.C. State Fair signs from Interstate 40 Exit 290 (Cary/Hwy. 54) or Exit 291 (Cary Towne Blvd.) to the WakeMed Soccer Park on East Chatham.

Chapel Hill and Research Triangle Park

The Triangle Transit buses will run on Saturdays and Sundays during the fair. Cost is $5 for a round trip. People with disabilities pay $2.50. Info: 919-485-RIDE (7433)

UNC Mangum Hall

Saturdays: Buses leave every 10 minutes before the hour from Mangum Hall between 8:45 a.m. and 7 p.m.

Sundays: Buses leave every 10 minutes before the hour from 10:45 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Friday Center

Saturdays: Buses leave on the hour from the Friday Center park-and-ride lot (off N.C. 54) between 9 a.m. and 7 p.m.

Sundays: Buses depart on the hour from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Triangle Transit Regional Transit Center

901 Slater Road, Exit 282 (Page Road) on I-40.

Saturdays: Buses leave at 30 minutes past the hour between 9:30 a.m. and 7:30 p.m.

Sundays: Buses leave at 30 minutes past the hour between 11:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

All buses depart the fairgrounds on the hour from noon to 10 p.m. on Saturdays and noon to 6 p.m. on Sundays.

Durham

DATA buses depart hourly from the Durham Station (515 West Pettigrew St.) and from the Heritage Square park-and-ride lot (401 East Lakewood Ave.). Info: 919-485-RIDE (7433)

Mondays through Saturday: Service from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. with the last departure from the fairgrounds at 11 p.m.

On Sundays: Service from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. with the last departure from the fairgrounds at 7 p.m.

Fares: $2 round trip, $1 for people with disabilities. Seniors 65 and older and youth 12 and younger ride free.

Garner

Buses will leave from the McLaurin Parking Co. park-and-ride lot at 500 Chapanoake Road in Garner. Buses depart on the hour between 8 a.m. and 9 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays only. Buses depart the fair for the return to Garner on the hour from 9 a.m. to midnight. The fare is $4 round trip or $2 for seniors older than 65 or passengers with disabilities. Kids under 40 inches ride free with a paying passenger. Exact change required. Info: 919-833-7522
