CHAPEL HILL — The host North Carolina women’s golf team fired an even-par 288 to tie for second place in the opening round of the Tar Heel Invitational Friday at UNC Finley Golf Course. Duke is 8-over in fifth place and N.C. State sits at 12-over in eighth.Virginia leads the field at 2-under.
In the individual standings, Baylor’s Hayley Davis shot a 5-under 67 to lead the field. Dukes Laetitia Beck and UNC’s Jackie Chang are three shots back tied for third.
Men’s Soccer
N.C. State 1, Virginia Tech 0: Danny DiPrima scored in the 77th minute on an assist from Alex Martinez and Fabian Otte had a shutout as the Wolfpack (8-6, 1-4) won beat the Hokies (5-6-2, 0-4-1) at Blacksburg, Va.
Women’s Soccer
North Carolina 4, Clemson 0: Maria Lubrano had the first multi-goal game of her career and Hanna Gardner tallied the first goal of her career as the Tar Heels shutout the host Tigers at Riggs Field. Senior midfielder Amber Brooks added a goal and two assists.
It was the second straight solo shutout win for the Tar Heels’ starting goalkeeper Adelaide Gay. East Carolina 0, SMU 0: Despite being dominated in possesion and giving up 16 corner kicks the Pirates (8-5-2, 4-1-1 Conference USA) came away with a tie against the visiting Mustangs (6-6-3, 2-2-3).
Volleyball
North Carolina 3, Virginia 2: The Tar Heels (14-4, 5-3) denied the Cavaliers their first ACC win of the season 25-18, 21-25, 26-24, 17-25, 15-11.UNC Senior Emily McGee had 18 kills and eight digs.
Presbyterian 3, Campell 0: The Camels (7-18, 0-6) fell 14-25, 21-25, 19-25 at Clinton, S.C. despite freshman Sam Zuber’s career-best 12 digs.
Clemson 3, Duke 2: The Blue Devils (10-9, 1-6) held a 2-1 advantage but the Tigers rallied for a 25-13, 17-25, 16-25, 25-22, 15-11 five-set victory Friday evening at Cameron Indoor Stadium.
N.C. State 3, Virginia Tech 1: The Wolfpack (16-3, 6-2) won a tight 25-23, 19-25, 25-23, 25-22 match to break a 15-match losing streak to the Hokies (11-7, 4-4).
Field Hockey
Duke 1, James Madison: The Blue Devils (6-8, 0-4) outshot the Dukes (8-5) 18-4 at Harrisonburg, Va. Sophomore Martine Chichizola scored the lone goal.
