CHAPEL HILL — Minnesota will not be visiting Kenan Stadium next season. ROBERT WILLETT
Minnesota has backed out of two scheduled football games with North Carolina, a source with knowledge of the agreement said on Monday.
The source wasnt authorized to comment publicly but spoke on condition of anonymity. A Minnesota athletic department spokesman declined comment.
UNC and Minnesota had been scheduled to play on Sept. 7, 2013 at Kenan Stadium, and on Sept. 13, 2014, at Minnesotas TCF Bank Stadium. Those games, though, will no longer be played.
As part of the cancellation agreement, Minnesota will pay UNC $800,000, according to the source.
Minnesotas decision to cancel the series leaves two vacancies on UNCs non-conference schedules in 2013 and 14. UNC next season is scheduled to play at South Carolina and at East Carolina. The Tar Heels 2014 game at Minnesota had been UNCs only known non-conference game that season.
