The old rivalry between Northern Durham and Southern Durham will be renewed Friday night in a game that has major PAC-Six 4A implications.
Northern (6-2, 4-0) and Southern (5-4, 4-1) are still in the hunt for the regular-season championship and the conference’s top seed in the playoffs. Northern would like to set up a climatic showdown with Durham Hillside (6-2, 4-0) next week, while Southern, which is open next week, hopes to beat Northern and have Hillside lose next week and possibly create a three-way tie for the title.
Southern has won four straight games since dropping an 18-13 decision to Hillside in its PAC-Six opener.
The Spartans are led by quarterback Kendall Hinton, who has thrown for 1,980 yards and 15 touchdowns this season. Maurice Trowell is a big-play receiver with 33 receptions for 686 yards and seven touchdowns.
Northern counters with a powerful running game led by Kylyn Flemming’s 1,155 yards and 12 touchdowns. He averages 144.4 yards per game and the Knights are rushing for 292.2 yards per game. Tim Stevens
