CORRECTION: The State Highway Patrol says George Merrill Davis III died. A trooper previously identified the deceased as another George Merrill Davis. Correction made at 5 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 18, 2012.

A Durham man has been identified as the victim in a fatal two-car accident that happened Sunday night on N.C. 751 near U.S. 70 in Orange County.

George Merrill Davis III, 34, of Durham was killed, according to State Highway Patrol Trooper Stephen Foster.

A Chevy Trailblazer traveling south on N.C. 751 and Davis’ 2005 Hyundai Santa Fe traveling north struck rear-view mirrors, Foster said. The Hyundai continued to travel north after the collision, and then ran off the road to the left, striking a concrete bridge railing. The car went down an embankment, then caught fire.

No charges have been filed.
