Projecting the high school 4-AA football playoffs

Published: October 23, 2012

Traditional North Carolina high school football power Richmond County and 2011Class 4A champion Scotland County may be obstacles for area teams this year in the N.C. High School Athletic Association 4AA playoffs.

Richmond has been in the Midwest 4AA bracket in recent years while Scotland has been in the 4A bracket. Based on projections this year, however, both could land in the 4AA Mideast bracket and could be waiting for the 4AA East winner in the Eastern finals.

The projections are based on current records and use the 2011 average daily membership numbers that are used to determine if teams play in the 4AA or 4A bracket.

Most teams have one game remaining and the projection does not take that game into account. Richmond County and Scotland play each other on Friday and Leesville Road plays Wake Forest-Rolesville. The results from Friday night’s games will impact the seedings.

The N.C. High School Athletic Association will prepare the official brackets on Saturday. The tops seeds from each conference will receive the top playoff seeds. Although the matchups are undetermined, it is likely that one Wake County team will advance to the 4AA semifinals.
