RALEIGH — Police say they have made an arrest in a murder case that took place on Christmas Day more than a decade ago.
Police say Alfonso Montoya Hernandez, 59, has been charged with killing Pedro Castillo Gallegos at a home in East Raleigh on Dec. 25, 1999. Hernandez was arrested in North Dakota and is awaiting extradition back to Raleigh.
Gallegos was 28 at the time of his death. He had been stabbed and cut when police arrived at 208 Colleton Road at about 4:30 that Christmas morning.
Hernandez was quickly identified as a suspect, but was thought to have fled the United States, according to Raleigh police. Because of the pending warrant for his arrest, U.S. Customs and Border Patrol agents arrested him Wednesday.
