Giglio: It's Alabama, then Kansas State … this week

What to do at No. 2?

Oregon might be the best team in the country, but what have the Ducks done so far? Either Arizona or Washington would qualify as their best win, and both have a losing conference record.

Notre Dame and Kansas State are 8-0, and they each have a road win over Oklahoma and against Miami.

Kansas State might have the best offensive player in college football (QB Collin Klein). Notre Dame might have the best defensive player in college football (LB Manti Te’o).

The edge, as of today, goes to Kansas State, which also has wins over West Virginia, Texas Tech and Iowa State.

The bad news for K-State and Oregon: Notre Dame is going to get into a game of “Anything you can do, I can do better.” If the Irish run the table, it will have wins over the best team on K-State’s schedule (Oklahoma) and Oregon’s (USC).

But that’s putting the cart before the horse. Who’s to say Alabama, as good as it has looked, won’t stumble at LSU, as bad as it has looked, this Saturday. Then what to do at No. 1?

For all of its faults, that’s the beauty of college football: you never know what you’re going to get.
