Collision on Raleigh bridge claims 2 lives

From staff reportsOctober 29, 2012

— A head-on collision late Monday afternoon has claimed the lives of two people.

Vance Edward Wilson, 61, of 4307 Emerald Forest Drive in Durham, and Jeri Powell Massey, 55, of 809 Mordecai Drive in Raleigh, both died Monday at WakeMed’s Raleigh campus from injuries suffered when their respective vehicles crashed head-on while traveling across an Atlantic Avenue bridge that spans the railroad tracks just north of Capital Boulevard, according to police spokesman Jim Sughrue.

Wilson drifted into the guardrail on the southbound shoulder, then crossed the median into the northbound lane, where he collided with Massey before his vehicle overturned and came to rest back in the southbound lane, according to a crash report from the Raleigh Police Department.

There were no passengers in either car, Sughrue said. Additional details of the accident are still under investigation, Sughrue said.
