Lowell Hoffmann: Spend at all cost

November 2, 2012

Spend at all cost

With respect to recent N&O headlines regarding Gov. Bev Perdue’s transfer of $20 million from unspent funds to Pre-K programs, we readers can learn three important lessons.

First, we learn that news media will cover the controversy of the governor’s actions and thus overlook two more important and lasting lessons.

Second, government department heads and officials will reinforce their learning not to leave money unspent. Savings, efficiency and thrift will not be rewarded.

Third, your readers and we taxpayers will also learn that any money sent to Raleigh will be spent. Saving for rainy days is not in fashion.

Thus endeth this particular lesson.
