Doesn’t look good

The news that N.C. Supreme Court Justice Paul Newby is being backed by well over a million dollars from special-interest groups in his re-election bid should concern us all. How does he differ in any significant way from a politician responding to his or her constituents? Who can believe he will exercise his independent judgment in arriving at judicial decisions (even if as a person of integrity he in fact does so)? Appearances matter, and the appearance here is terrible.
