ECU women finish fall tennis hot

The East Carolina women’s tennis team captured four singles flights and tied for one Tuesday during its final home tournament of the fall. Yilian Zhang, Nicole LaDuca, Danielle Terpko, Dana Gray, Abby Richmond and Karling Watson went undefeated against Campbell and N.C. Central.

Wrestling

Duke: Fresh off a title at the Hokie Open, redshirt freshman Conner Hartmann was named ACC Co-Wrestler of the Week. He posted a 4-0 record, including beating two of the top three seeds.

Soccer

Elon: Darren Powell and senior forward Chris Thomas were voted the Southern Conference’s coach and player of the year, respectively, by the league’s coaches. Thomas was first team all-conference and midfielders Gabe Latigue and Matt Wescoe were on the second team. Samuel McBride and Miguel Salazar were on the all-freshman team.

Volleyball

Elon: Middle blocker Celia Rose Eddy, who had 38 blocks to help the Phoenix post a 6-2 mark during October, was named the Southern Conference’s Defensive Player of the Month.

Men’s Basketball

N.C. State: The Wolfpack is one of four ACC schools ranked among the Sports Illustrated preseason top 25. No. 5 N.C. State is the highest ranked of the ACC schools.

Other

Durham Sports Club: The Durham Sports Club will meet Wednesday at Croasdaile Country Club at noon. Duke men’s basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski will be the guest speaker.

Raleigh Sports Club: The Raleigh Sports Club will meet noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday at Highland United Methodist Church. Duke football coach David Cutcliffe will be the guest speaker. Cleveland High football player Austin Jacobs will be honored as the student athlete of the week.

Football

Saint Augustine’s: Senior Tyron Laughinghouse was named the CIAA Special Teams Player of the Year in addition to making the All-CIAA first team as a wide receiver and kick returner and the second team as a punt returner.

Defensive end Javarous Faulk, linebacker Chaz Robinson and offensive tackle Stedman Gardner also were on the first team. Center Rory Nixon was named to the second team.

Elon: Senior receiver Aaron Mellette was the Southern Conference Offensive Player of the Month after making 32 catches for 595 yards and eight touchdowns.
