Ortavia Dale Burks, 89, of Newport, died Wednesday November 7, 2012 at Taylor Extended Care.

A graveside service will be held 12:00 pm Friday at Coastal Carolina Veterans Cemetery.

Ortavia loved the arts. She shared her enthusiasm for the arts with others by teaching them how to paint and draw. She was known as Rosie the Riveter during WWII, it was her way of assisting with the war effort.

She is survived by her husband Billy Burks of the home: sisters, Annie Laura Harrington of Cary, Jane Elizabeth Brown and husband Charles of Marion, and Mary Ila Parker of Shallotte: one brother, James A. Byrd and wife Kathryn of Raleigh; several nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers the family request memorial donations be made to Salvation Army at P.O. Box 399 Morehead City, NC 28557 or Newport Meals on Wheels P.O. Box 1178 Newport, NC 28570.
