HILLSBOROUGH — A five-year member of Orange County’s EMS team will be recognized for his part in Wednesday’s delivery of a baby girl at a UNC-Chapel Hill bus stop.

The North Carolina 9-1-1 Board will present Tommy Holmes with an award at 10 a.m. Dec. 7 in a ceremony at the Time-Warner Corporate Office in Morrisville.

According to a news release, Holmes provided an “outstanding level of service” to UNC-CH doctoral student Emily Brewer and the baby’s mother during the surprise delivery.

Elizabeth Aguilar Lopez and a friend were at the Chapel Hill Transit bus stop when her water broke. The baby soon followed and was named for Brewer, who stopped to help.

Holmes answered Brewer’s 911 call and talked her through the process of cleaning and checking on the baby until paramedics could arrive.

“This is an honor for all of us at Orange County Emergency Services, as well as for all 9-1-1 telecommunicators across the nation,” said Capt. Dinah Jeffries, the county’s EMS operations manager.
