CHAPEL HILL — North Carolina coach Larry Fedora earlier today during the ACCs weekly coaches teleconference addressed the loss of Casey Barth, the Tar Heels kicker who suffered a season-ending injury during UNCs 68-50 loss against Georgia Tech.
Barth holds school records for both field goals and consecutive extra points made, but he has kicked for the final time for the Tar Heels. Thomas Moore, a sophomore walk-on, handled UNCs two kickoffs and two extra-point attempts (he made both) after Barth suffered his injury early in the third quarter on Saturday.
Moore also played in 12 games last season, after Barth suffered an injury in the first game.
Fedora said losing Barth is obviously a big loss for our football team.
He's the record holder here at the school for just about everything in the kicking game. He brings a wealth of experience and a lot of confidence to the position.
That said, Fedora expressed confidence in Moore. He made 6 of his 10 field goal attempts last season, and all 38 of his extra point attempts.
He's had plenty of live reps in games throughout his career, Fedora said. Even though we're going to miss Casey, the next guy has got to step up and play.
