Fight or build?
I was initially saddened by the Nov. 10 piece from Ed Feulner, president of the Heritage Foundation (“Fight for the right”). His extensive use of war terminology (three fights, two battles, two victories, one defeat and one warfare in the first few sentences) left me concerned that our democracy would continue to be held hostage by ideologues like Feulner. That we might continue towards replacing the cold war against the USSR with an internal cold war that threatens to tear our country apart from the inside.
By the end of his article, in amazing contrast to the opening, Feulner calls us to, build an America where freedom, opportunity, prosperity and civil society flourish. I am hopeful that America will heed that call, tossing aside those who make profit from divisiveness and call for internal warfare. Neither the country, nor Feulner, can have it both ways.
