Robert J. Johnson: The big test

The big test

As an 80-plus year-old Methodist minister, let me advise my fellow Christians to lay off their sharp condemnation of Barry Saunders. Everyone knows the Rev. Billy Graham played up to Republicans until he got burned by Nixon. After that, he steered clear of direct endorsements and actually became more mellow and gracious. But his enterprising son Franklin has a mean streak and narrow compass and is not above using his dad.

For all who claim to follow Jesus, we should heed the words of the ultimate judgment (Matthew 25:31 f.) in which the nations will be judged as to whether they have fed the hungry, clothed the naked, welcomed the stranger and ministered to those in prison. Let us judge our nation and all candidates by this test – and if brother Billy had done the same, I think he might have made a better choice.

Rev. Robert L. Johnson
