Family assistance

Thank you for sharing with the community the challenges those of us who have children with special needs endure (“Special needs, but no special help,” Nov. 4 front-page article). My wife and I were lucky that 20 years ago we were able to get our son with Down Syndrome in the program referenced. It had a huge positive effect on our family and I cannot want to imagine our life without it.

Through this program we got therapies and assistance which helped our son become as independent as possible. It’s sad that so many families have to struggle when these cost-effective programs are available, though limited in their funding.
