Green Hope's shooting downs Southeast Raleigh boys basketball

— Green Hope coach John Green wanted to give John Mosser a good look in the game’s first possession, hoping a quick bucket would give some early-season confidence to his senior.

Instead, the ball went to David Robertson, who swished a 3-pointer. It didn’t hurt Mosser – he finished with 29 points and 12 rebounds.

That’s about how the night went for Green Hope.

Even when things didn’t go how they were drawn up, they still went well. The Falcons went on a scoring binge in its 75-52 win against visiting Southeast Raleigh on Tuesday.

“We’ve got guys who can play college basketball and want to score,” Green said. “If we can get them to all buy in as a team, and then they come out and play like they did tonight, it’s going to be a good year.”

Sharing the ball was no problem for the Falcons (1-0), and neither was chemistry.

Green Hope had 16 assists on 24 made field goals.

Senior point guard Grant Rasmussen had a game-high seven assists to go along with his 13 points.

Robertson had 18 points, seven rebounds and four assists.

Damon Bidgood added to the balanced Falcons’ attack with eight points and six rebounds.

Southeast (1-1) trailed 38-30 at halftime but went cold in the second half. The Bulldogs shot 9-of-24 in the second half.

Coach John Baker Jr. is focused on the big picture, however. Point guard Willie Gaskins, who started last year at Upper Room Christian Academy, is coming off an ankle injury and is “at about 60 percent” according to the coach.

“It’s early, and my expectations early is just for us to go out and play hard,” Baker, Jr. said. “We’ve got a good group of guys... This time of year, I don’t even look at things. We haven’t put our offense in. We’re just out there playing, trying to get in shape and trying to get better.”

The Bulldogs were led by forward Justin Morris’ 19 points – which included back-to-back dunks off steals in the first half – and guard Willie Walker’s 18 points and five rebounds.

Gaskins had one point and one assist.
