Travels with Bob

I can only say that Bob Simpson’s Outdoors column in the Sports section [the final column appeared Nov. 15] was a most welcome read, like hearing from a good friend from time to time. His emphasis on enjoying the “going” when it came to his fishing excursions as opposed to how many fish he caught, and the beautiful descriptions of his trips, said it all about his view and respect of the outdoors.

Like the calm before an ocean storm one could experience the solitude and joy he felt in his writings while he was among his many friends with whom he shared a common bond of the coast. His knowledge of things of the water, and the wit with which he told his stories of his wooden boat, Sylvia, and the times of the old water men of coastal North Carolina, provided us with a glimpse into a culture that many of us never knew but wished we had. Thanks for all the trips, Bob.
