Dianne Smith: Frayed ACC

Frayed ACC

This has been a sad last few weeks – Bill Friday's death, the ongoing UNC academic scandal, and now the departure of Maryland from the Atlantic Coast Conference.

I am a Tar Heel first, but I have always had tremendous pride in the ACC. However, change is not always a positive. I mourned both the departure of South Carolina in 1971 and the recent expansions. Unfortunately, college athletics and the faces of rivals have changed since I entered UNC-CH in 1970. At this moment, I hope the Super Conferences take note that the so-called Super PACs ultimately didn't make a difference in the 2012 election. For now, Terps, thanks for the memories.
