DURHAM — State troopers have identified a man killed in a crash that ended a high-speed chase last weekend as Brian Eugene Caldwell, 45, of 605 Clayton Road in Durham.

Caldwell was killed early Saturday after his Chrysler Crossfire crashed head-on with a box truck on N.C. 98. Both the Crossfire and the truck burst into flames, burning Caldwell beyond recognition.

The driver and a passenger in the truck were taken to the hospital with injuries not considered life-threatening.

Troopers were chasing Caldwell because he had evaded a Highway Patrol DUI checkpoint.

The crash happened about 2:30 a.m.
