Disgraceful idea

I read that Rep. Renee Ellmers has introduced a bill in Congress to name the Century Post Office in downtown Raleigh for Sen. Jesse Helms. Ellmers is too young to have watched Helms nightly on his Viewpoint show on WRAL-TV. I did. He taught me as a boy that there are mean-spirited people in this world. His outspoken bigotry encompassed African-Americans, Catholics, Jews and others.

Later in his career he liked to remind us that he was always the same old Jesse.

To name the Century Post Office for the most deplorable person to disgrace North Carolina politics in my lifetime is an appalling idea.
