New Bern tops Porter Ridge for 4A title

— Jac Watkins’ 2-yard touchdown run with 26 seconds left gave New Bern a 39-38 victory over Indian Trail Porter Ridge on Friday night in the Class 4A North Carolina High School Athletic Association championship game.

Watkins finished with 62 yards rushing and four touchdowns while Josh Taylor added 146 yards and a score to help New Bern (15-0) cap its unbeaten season.

Jerrick Robbins rushed for 174 yards and a touchdown and teammate Chris Duffy added 130 yards rushing and three scores for Porter Ridge (13-2).

Matt Wogan kicked a 26-yard field goal with 6:12 to play to put Porter Ridge up 38-33. Taylor and Watkins then led New Bern 80 yards in 15 plays, converting two third downs and a fourth down before Watkins’ short game-winner in the final minute.

Zahair Cherry sealed it by intercepting Isaiah Hicklin’s final pass at the Porter Ridge 42 in the closing seconds.
