College Notebook: Duke's Plumlee, Sulaimon earn ACC honors

Duke forward Mason Plumlee was named ACC Co-Player of the Week and freshman Rasheed Sulaimon was the ACC Rookie of the Week after helping Duke top No. 4 Ohio State and Delaware last week.

A native of Warsaw, Ind., Plumlee shared the weekly honor with Virginia Tech’s Erick Green after delivering back-to-back double-doubles in Duke’s two wins in Cameron Indoor Stadium, including a 21-point, 17-rebound effort in the 73-68 win over Ohio State.

Sulaimon powered Duke to a second-half surge against the Buckeyes, scoring 17 points in the second half as Duke overcame a 31-23 halftime deficit.


Campbell: Sophomore forward Kiera Gaines was two assists away from a triple-double with 11 points and career bests in rebounds with 11 and assists with eight as the Campbell women’s basketball team posted a 84-54 victory over Columbia (S.C.) College.

Saint Augustine’s: Senior Temperance Jacobs was named CIAA Newcomer of the Week, and freshman teammate Jeanne Marie Wilson was voted CIAA Rookie of the Week in women’s basketball on Monday.

Jacobs averaged 11.3 points, 7.3 rebounds and four steals in three games including a 12-point, six-rebound, five-steal, four-assist effort in a loss to the University of D.C.

Wilson averaged 12.7 points in three games including a season high 21 points against UDC.

UNC: North Carolina freshman forward Xylina McDaniel has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Basketball Rookie of the Week.

McDaniel averaged a double-double with 15 points and 10.5 rebounds in games against No. 15 Ohio State and No. 16 Tennessee.


Saint Augustine’s: Senior football standouts Tyron Laughinghouse and Derrick Manning will don the shoulder pads at least one more time in their college careers. Both players are set to play in the National Bowl Game at J. Birney Crum Stadium in Allentown, Pa.

The National Bowl Game is a college all-star football game featuring participants from the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision, Division II, Division III and NAIA schools.

Laughinghouse and Manning will suit up for the Red Nation team.


N.C. State: The N.C. State softball team has signed five recruits in the 2012 early signing period, Wolfpack first-year head coach Shawn Rychcik announced on Monday.

The class includes pitcher Courtney Mirabella of East Manatee, Fla., outfielder Tyler Ross, a native of Cameron, outfielder Hannah Yeager of Los Gatos, Calif., catcher Molly Hutchinson of Spring Valley, Calif., and speedy infielder Nadia Kemp of Wappingers Falls, N.Y.
