• Despite a first-half injury, Richard Howell played 32 minutes, including the entire second half. Howell played 16 minutes in N.C. State’s loss to Oklahoma State and 19 against Michigan and fouled out of both games. “We’re a different team when plays,” coach Mark Gottfried said.

• Freshmen T.J. Warren (two points), Rodney Purvis (seven) and Tyler Lewis (none) played diminished roles Tuesday. Warren started, for the second straight game, but he was held to a season-low in scoring. Purvis played 32 minutes as a reserve and Warren played 19. Lewis only played six minutes.

• N.C. State lost to Gonzaga 69-60 in 2002 in its only other Jimmy V Classic appearance.
