Raleigh-area high school tournament will feature 3 ACC recruits

UNC, N.C. State, Duke recruits in boys’ bracket

Three ACC basketball recruits lead the 20-team boys’ field in the 41st annual Holiday Invitational basketball tournament that begins Wednesday at Raleigh’s Broughton High.

The boys’ field is divided into two eight-team brackets and a four-team bracket. There also is an eight-team girls bracket being played at Cary Academy.

Garner opens the tournament at 12:40 p.m. against Goldsboro and Leesville Road plays Greensboro Dudley (2:20) in the four-team bracket.

Five other games are scheduled at Broughton on Wednesday: Broughton vs. Person (4); Holly Springs vs. (N.J.) St. Joseph (5:40); Oxford Webb vs. Clinton (7:20) and Word of God vs. Apex (9).

The first day’s action will showcase Webb’s Isaiah Hicks, North Carolina recruit; Person’s Tyrone Outlaw (UNC-Greensboro); Broughton’s Devonte Graham (Appalachian State) and James Hemphill (Naval Academy), and Word of God’s Josh Newkirk (Pittsburgh).

N.C. State recruit Anthony Barber plays on Thursday at 9 p.m., when his Hampton, Va., club takes on Waxhaw Cuthbertson. Duke recruit Matt Jones of DeSoto, Texas, also plays Thursday. DeSoto takes on Kinston at 5:40 p.m.

Jones’ and Barber’s teams are in the Summitt Hospitality bracket and could play each other. The other teams in the bracket are Broughton, Person, Holly Springs, (N.J.) St. Joseph, Kinston, Cuthbertson and Hampton, Va.

The boys’ Shavlik Randolph bracket includes Raleigh Word of God, Apex, Oxford Webb, Clinton, Charlottesville (Va.) Miller School, High Point Christian, Wilson Greenfield and New Hampton, N.H.

The girls’ games on Wednesday are Cary Academy vs. Durham Hillside (2 p.m.), Broughton vs. Holly Springs (3:30), East Wake vs. Charlotte Myers Park (5), and Rocky Mount vs. Greensboro Dudley (6:30).
