Salute to editors

I join many readers in congratulating former N&O editorial page editor Steve Ford and associate editorial page editor Allen Torrey for their years of outstanding service as they retire.

Ford was consistently superb. He was never afraid to take unpopular positions and his columns and editorials were always well-reasoned, based on fact and carefully written. I particularly remember his strong support of our public school system, support for civil rights, equal opportunity and protection under the law for all individuals, and reform of both the mental health system and the criminal justice system.

Torrey was always fair and even-handed in selecting letters and Points of View for publication.

I extend my heartiest best wishes to these fine gentlemen. They will be missed.
