FUQUAY-VARINA — (Editor's note: An early version of this story on Thursday incorrectly said Aaron Allgood had been drinking. He had not. Ross Mayfield was charged with driving while impaired.)

A Fuquay-Varina man was killed just after midnight Thursday when his Mazda was struck by a Saturn at the intersection of Lake Wheeler and Hilltop Needmore roads, the State Highway Patrol said.

Aaron Craig Allgood, 24, of 10200 Stephens Pond Road, was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at WakeMed following the wreck.

The driver of the Saturn, Ross Mayfield, suffered minor injuries. His passenger was not injure in the crash.

State troopers have charged Mayfield with driving while impaired. Other charges could be brought by the DA pending a further investigation, officials said.

The crash scene was a little more than a half-mile from Allgood’s home.
