Members of the Fuquay-Varina Police SRT team help a 'wounded' Village of Pinehurst SWAT team member outside of Rush dormitory on the NC Central Campus, Durham Thursday morning, Jan. 3, 2013. Over two hundred law enforcement, emergency medical service, fire department and emergency management personnel participated in the largest ever full scale terrorist training exercise on a campus in the University of North Carolina system. In addition to the first responders, at least forty volunteers played the roles of victims and hostages to the dozen or more terrorists played by Durham Police Dept. officers.

— N.C. State University will simulate a report of an attack by a gunman on campus Friday afternoon to test its ability to respond to a major emergency.

Much of the exercise will center around two central campus dormitories. Like their counterparts at N.C. Central University – who staged a large-scale drill Thursday involving a fictitious terrorist attack – NCSU officials are taking advantage of the fact that students are still on holiday break.

The exercise, which will last from 1 to 4 p.m., will cause delays and disruption on parts of campus. Harris parking lot will be closed during the drill, and drivers should use the Dan Allen deck instead. Also, vehicles won’t be able to enter Cates Avenue between Dan Allen Drive and Morrill Drive, though outbound traffic will be allowed.

Pedestrians will be able to access all buildings along Cates Avenue.
