Smithfield police make arrest in wake of shooting that injured three

Published: January 4, 2013

— Police have charged a man with illegal gun possession after a shooting Thursday that injured three people, including a three-year-old boy.

Shanquan Dakell Padgett, 21, was charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon after he was stopped by police leaving the scene of the shooting on Mill Street. Padgett lives at 509 Mill Street, where the shooting took place, according to police.

Police have not charged anyone with the shooting, which injured a 24-year-old woman, her young son and a 24-year-old man. The woman and her son were apparently hit by the crossfire after a dispute between a group of men standing outside the house and the occupants of two vehicles who had just pulled up.

Smithfield police are requesting the public’s help as they investigate the shooting. They ask anyone with information to contact Detective O’branovich at 919-989-1072 or the Smithfield Tip Line at 919-989-8835.
