CARY — A home-court advantage couldn’t help Cary as Panther Creek swept the Imps in a varsity doubleheader Friday.

The Catamounts boys took an overtime thriller from the Imps, 61-60, as the girls walked away with a 53-35 victory.

Both teams were exchanging baskets evenly in the beginning of the boys’ matchup, but Panther Creek’s ability to hit shots from behind the arc allowed the Catamounts to gain momentum on the Imps.

Cary was able to keep the deficit manageable throughout the game and took its first lead of the game, 45-44, early in the fourth quarter.

After a slew of timeouts and fouls late in the fourth quarter, Panther Creek got the final possession with the game tied. With 6.7 seconds left, Nubian Span missed a last second attempt and the game went into overtime knotted at 56.

After Cory Gensler tied the game at 60, Panther Creek’s Tre David, the only senior on the Catamounts’ roster, was able to draw a foul and get to the free-throw line with .9 seconds left. After missing the front-end of the two-shot foul, he drained the second to seal the win.

“We couldn’t be more happier as a team to get a win but it was our senior, our only senior that was able to knock down that foul shot,” Catamounts’ varsity boys head coach L.J. Hepp said.

The Lady Imps didn’t present a formidable challenge to the Catamounts, as Panther Creek dominated inside early in the game. Allie Tuttle and Mercedes Harris anchored the attack for the Catamounts. Tuttle pulled down seven rebounds in the first half and scored six points. Harris added five points and five rebounds.

Cary was able disrupt Panther Creek with a full-court press, but failed to convert the turnovers into scoring opportunities.

“We were able to manage it well,” varsity girls coach Geoff Bowman said. “I don’t think they got too many steals off of us. That’s one thing we focused on this week. We knew that they were going to be undersized so they would have to press us. We did a good job handling the ball.”

The Imps efforts began to pay off late in the second half, as they were able to close the gap to 20-12 at halftime after a frustrating first quarter.

“Coach (Patrick) Daly always has his team hustling out there,” Bowman said. “They were all over the place. I think they beat us to the ball a couple of times.”

They kept themselves in the game by keeping the pressure on Panther Creek throughout the game. Cary was able to cut the deficit to six points in the fourth quarter, but the Catamounts were able to pull away and score 22 points in the final frame.

“We took charge when it mattered,” Bowman said.

Jordan Webb’s quick hands were also on display in the win. She contributed eight assists and 12 steals to the winning cause.

Meredith Guthrie served as one of the bright spots for the Imps. She scored 16 points and grabbed five rebounds.
