RALEIGH — Police are not sure why a woman was lying in the middle of the road when she was hit and killed on the Interstate 440 Beltline on Monday night.
April Lichelle Alston, 26, of 6012 Namozine Court in Raleigh was hit near Poole Road at 7:22 p.m., according to police. Westbound traffic was shut down between Poole Road and New Bern Avenue for a time.
Police were unable to determine why Alston, who would have turned 27 on Wednesday, was in the highway, according to an accident report. Investigators did not suspect drugs or alcohol were involved, the report shows.
The report said Alston was prone in the middle lane of the interstate “for some unknown reason” when she was hit by a Jeep that was traveling 60 mph.
Four other cars collided with the Jeep when the driver hit his brakes, the report said. None of the drivers or passengers in the vehicles was hurt.
