O’Brien positives
I was sorry to see football coach Tom O’Brien get the ax at N.C. State; however, as a UVa alum, I am glad to see him return to Charlottesville. He is a class act who helped Virginia as an assistant under George Welch become a competitive team within the ACC and nationally, doing it the right way and proving that maintaining high integrity and high academic standards can produce winning programs.
Virginia coach Mike London is trying to do the same thing, and having O’Brien there again can’t help but be a positive sign for the Cavs in the future. I look forward to the rematch with NCSU in a couple of years.
We’ll see then whether NCSU athletic director Debbie Yow made the right choice and whether it was worth the firing of a good man to get the Alabama-style program results she thinks are best for the school. I would think the fiasco at UNC-CH, and the school’s tarnished academic reputation, would prove it’s not worth it.
