Employer of slain Garner couple holds fundraiser for family

Published: January 9, 2013

— A Golden Corral in south Raleigh is holding a fundraiser Thursday to help cover the final expenses of two of its employees who were fatally shot in their home over the weekend and to ease the expenses on the family that is caring for their two sons.

The restaurant, at 3555 Grenelle St. just off Tryon Road, was the longtime workplace of Jose Samuel Flores Mendoza and Maria Savaria Mendoza, both 34, who were discovered in their home just outside Garner after a neighbor reported hearing loud noises around 12:30 a.m. Saturday. The Wake County Sheriff’s Office has not named any suspects in the shooting.

Store spokesperson Scott Schaberg said there will be collection boxes in the restaurant and that all of the servers have volunteered their tips from Thursday for the collection.

Donations can also be made to the Jose and Maria Mendoza fund at any Wells Fargo bank branch, according to Schaberg.

The restaurant chain has also promised to match whatever money is collected Thursday.

“They were two great, longtime employees who were part of the Golden Corral family,” said Schaberg.

The Mendozas are survived by two young sons, ages 3 and 12. The 3-year-old was in the home at the time of the shooting.

“My thoughts and prayers go out to those young boys who are now without parents,” said Schaberg.
